Tools of the Season

This new series on Plated in Season — KITCHEN TOOLS— will explore the knives, cookware, and kitchen gear that make everyday cooking better. From sharpening techniques to cookware care, I’ll share what I actually use, what’s worth the investment, and what truly makes a difference in a real kitchen. Because when your tools feel right in your hand, cooking isn’t just another task — it becomes part of the pleasure of the season.

A Knife – Chef’s Knife

In my kitchen, every season starts with a knife. Spring brings tender herbs and crisp asparagus, summer calls for juicy tomatoes, and fall means hearty root vegetables that need a sturdy blade. The knife you use — and how it feels in your hand — can completely change how you cook and how much you enjoy it.

The Tools That Earn a Place on the Counter

I reach for my Made In 8-inch chef’s knife most days. It’s balanced, sturdy, and sharp enough to handle everything from slicing onions to carving roasted squash. Over time, it’s become part of my daily rhythm — like my favorite pan or the wooden spoon that’s seen hundreds of meals. The next knife I am quick to grab in my Made In 6-inch chef knife. A workhorse in my kitchen as the smaller size is comfortable to hold to chop veggies, clean up some chicken or chop fresh herbs.

These tools aren’t about collecting gear; they’re about finding what works for you. A knife that feels comfortable. A pan that heats evenly. A cutting board that doesn’t slide. Small details that make cooking smoother, safer, and more satisfying.

What to Look for:

  1. Well balanced
  1. Full-tang and Fully-forged blade
  1. A great handle built for comfort and strength

I have fallen in love with Made In products and specifically the knives. The chef knives as well as others are crafted in France, designed for the home cook and the professional chef.
